Prestigious Fellowship recognises Keith Hutchinson’s outstanding contribution to engineering, and reinforces Safinah’s commitment to technical excellence
Gateshead, United Kingdom – Safinah is delighted to announce that Keith Hutchinson, Head of Professional Technical & Engineering Services (PTES), has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), one of the UK’s most prestigious professional distinctions for engineers.
Keith joins the Royal Academy of Engineering’s 2026 cohort of newly elected Fellows, bringing together leading engineers and technology specialists recognised for their outstanding and continuing contributions to engineering.
The Royal Academy of Engineering has officially listed Keith Hutchinson FREng as Head of Professional Technical and Engineering Services and Senior Consultant Whole Ship Design and Naval Architecture at Safinah.
This year’s new Fellows, announced in the year of the Academy’s 50th anniversary, are making an incredible impact across engineering and technology with innovations in clean energy, AI, medicine and public health. These leading figures have influenced academia and business, worked to widen participation in engineering for people from underrepresented backgrounds, and provided expert policy advice to government.
The Fellows elected this year reflect the lasting impact of the Academy’s Fellowship Fit for the Future initiative, launched in July 2020 ahead of the Academy’s 50th anniversary. The campaign successfully exceeded its ambition, with more than 50% of Fellows elected during the initiative coming from underrepresented groups. As a result, the initiative has now been fully embedded into the Academy’s business-as-usual Fellowship processes. It continues to drive nominations of outstanding engineers from a broader range of backgrounds, including women, disabled and LGBTQ+ engineers, those from ethnic minority backgrounds, non-traditional educational pathways and emerging industries, as well as engineers who have achieved excellence at an earlier career stage than has traditionally been recognised.
The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a special ceremony in London on 19 October, when each Fellow will sign the roll book. In joining the Fellowship, they will lend their unique capabilities to achieving the Academy’s overarching strategic goal to engineer better lives.
Recognition of Engineering Excellence
The Royal Academy of Engineering brings together some of the UK and international engineering community’s leading figures from industry, academia, technology and innovation. Fellows contribute their expertise to the Academy’s work in advancing engineering excellence and addressing major economic and societal challenges.
Election to the Fellowship represents significant recognition of Keith’s contribution to the engineering profession and his extensive expertise in naval architecture, whole ship design and professional technical and engineering services.
Keith’s election therefore represents not only an important personal achievement, but also a significant milestone for Safinah and its growing Professional Technical & Engineering Services capability.

At Safinah, Keith leads a specialist team providing independent engineering expertise and technical consultancy to clients operating across complex marine and engineering environments.
His experience in whole ship design and naval architecture complements Safinah’s established expertise in coatings, corrosion, asset integrity and technical assurance, strengthening the company’s ability to provide clients with multidisciplinary technical support across the lifecycle of their assets.
Strengthening Safinah’s Technical Expertise
Keith’s Fellowship further reinforces Safinah’s commitment to maintaining the highest levels of technical expertise within the organisation.
As an independent consultancy, Safinah works with shipowners, operators, manufacturers, yards, energy companies, infrastructure stakeholders, legal and insurance professionals and other organisations where technically robust and independently informed decisions are essential.
The recognition of one of Safinah’s senior technical leaders by the Royal Academy of Engineering reflects the depth of engineering knowledge that underpins this work.
Andy Hopkinson, Managing Director of Safinah, said:
“Keith’s election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering is an outstanding achievement and one that everyone at Safinah is extremely proud of.
“Fellowship recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to engineering, and Keith’s appointment reflects the depth of knowledge, experience and technical leadership he brings to Safinah and to the wider engineering profession.
